While acknowledging the superiority of his opponents, Scaloni reminded the world of a difficult but important truth — reaching the pinnacle of world football and appearing in two consecutive World Cup finals is no small achievement. Although the defeat is painful to accept, Scaloni could find no fault with the fight and effort of his players.
He openly acknowledged that the team had been short-handed heading into the final. Nevertheless, the Argentine coach views reaching a second consecutive World Cup final — following their triumph in Qatar in 2022 — as a significant accomplishment in itself. “We have to recognise that getting to this point for the second time in a row is something truly remarkable,” he said.
“The feeling of defeat is certainly painful, but we gave everything we had on the pitch,” an emotional Scaloni said in a pitchside interview shortly after the final whistle. “I have a great deal I could say about how we got this far, but there is no point dwelling on it now. I am so grateful to these players for reaching another final and fighting until the very last moment. In the end, Spain played better than us — but I will always carry wonderful memories of this team. We must respect just how difficult it was to get this far.”
Even in defeat, this accomplished Argentine coach accepted the cruel realities of football with characteristic grace. “Just as we celebrate together in victory, we must also respect the pain of defeat with the same unity. We accept that we lost today. But we fought until we had nothing left to give. We may have fallen short in the final moments, but the sacrifices these players made on the field today stand as a remarkable example for the people and young people of our country. Football will defeat you — and you have to pick yourself up and move forward from there.”
Although he was reluctant to single out any specific player’s injury as an excuse, Argentina were severely tested by physical strain throughout the 90 minutes. Two of their most trusted defenders, Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez, were forced to leave the field through injury. Despite everything, Scaloni remained deeply proud of his players’ efforts until the very end. “I remember those final moments clearly, because only we know how difficult it is to reach this point in a World Cup final. We wanted to lift that trophy. But all I can say to these players is thank you. You can play well or you can play poorly, but when someone gives absolutely everything on the field the way these players did, there is simply no room for blame.”
