Messi's Name Was Deliberately Left Out of the Team Talk

Who knows better than the finest coaches in modern football what Lionel Messi is capable of on the pitch? Throughout his career, this Argentine superstar has made it his business to dismantle opposing defenses and make them tremble, day after day. He has rendered the carefully constructed tactics of the world’s greatest coaching minds as fragile as paper boats on countless occasions. Many legendary coaches, exhausted by the search for a formula to stop him, have ultimately had to accept defeat.

This time around, however, one coach found an extraordinary psychological strategy to shield his players from the all-too-familiar fear that Messi’s name alone can inspire. To prevent that fear from taking root in his players’ minds, Egypt’s coach imposed what amounted to an unwritten ban on even mentioning the Argentine captain’s name in the dressing room.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan’s primary objective before the round of 16 match against Argentina was to avoid any unnecessary elevation of Lionel Messi in his players’ minds — a deliberate tactic designed to prevent excessive respect or anxiety from forming around the Albiceleste superstar.

“For some players, the name ‘Messi’ can be a little intimidating,” the Pharaohs coach said in an interview with Egyptian television network OnTV. Egypt were knocked out of the World Cup after a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the round of 16, and in this interview following his return home, Hassan spoke openly about the various experiences and emotions of that thrilling encounter.

Despite leading 2-0 in the match, Egypt’s players appeared to lose their mental composure in the final 10 minutes, ultimately costing them what would have been a historic victory over the reigning world champions. Hassan, however, defended his players’ performance despite the defeat — though he admitted he had anticipated the risk of such a collapse before the match began.

Addressing the wealth of star quality in the Albiceleste squad, the coach said, “I wanted the players to have a clear technical and tactical plan so that they would not be fixated on any one specific opposing player. At the same time, I wanted to keep them mentally strong, so that neither the name of the opposing team nor the names of their star players would create additional pressure on them.”

From the outset, Hassan had been working to build his players’ mental resilience and guard against any sense of inferiority. He said he advised them, before taking the field, to play their natural game “without looking at the color of the opponent’s jersey.”

The coach also revealed a striking tactical detail, saying, “When I was illustrating movements during our pre-match tactical sessions, even if the movement in question was Messi’s, I would deliberately avoid mentioning his name. I would say ‘player number 10’ or ‘number so-and-so.’ The purpose of this was to remove any excessive respect or fear of the opponent from their minds.”

Hassan also expressed his frustration over the referee’s performance during the round of 16 match. He reiterated his view that the referee’s decisions had unnecessarily heightened tension on the pitch, disrupting the North African team’s concentration and negatively affecting their technical execution. “What was happening on the pitch, one thing after another, was increasing the nervous tension among our players,” said Hassan. “The referee was calling fouls and brandishing cards unfairly.”
