Argentina fell behind early in the thrilling semi-final, but Enzo’s brilliant goal brought them level, before Argentina went on to secure a 2-1 victory.
As England reeled from their World Cup exit, Chelsea’s official account posted a message celebrating Enzo’s goal. Fans quickly reacted to the post from their own club. Many felt it was inappropriate to celebrate a player scoring for a foreign team at such a painful moment for the club’s English fans, and criticized the club for disregarding their supporters’ feelings.
One angry fan wrote on social media, “It’s extremely shameful to see a post like this from an English club! Of course, nothing better can be expected from this club.”
Alongside the criticism, many fans joked, “After this post, Chelsea’s social media admin probably won’t have a job anymore!” Facing criticism from all sides, Chelsea deleted the post without comment or explanation.
Argentine midfielder Enzo joined Chelsea from Benfica for a world-record fee in 2023. He was previously accused of singing racist chants with teammates after winning the 2024 Copa América; at the time, he apologized to his Chelsea teammates and was fined by the club.
Enzo’s importance to Chelsea on the pitch remains significant. But his goal — and the club’s post — on the night England were eliminated from the World Cup on home soil reignited anger among English football fans.
Despite stirring up this controversy, Enzo now has his sights set on the ultimate prize. Argentina will face Spain in the final on July 19.
