The Commonwealth Games are underway in Glasgow, Scotland. Apart from Rakib in boxing, no one has been able to light the lamp of hope for Bangladesh at the event so far. Samiul Islam Rafi disappointed in the swimming event today.
Rafi competed in lane 4 of heat 4 in the 50-meter butterfly event. The Bangladeshi swimmer was eliminated despite setting a personal best time. Rafi finished the swim in 25.23 seconds today. However, that was not enough to advance to the next round.
Rafi’s previous personal best was 26.01 seconds. He finished second in his heat, but placed 36th overall out of 70 competitors.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s fastest man and woman in athletics, Imranur Rahman and Shirin Akhter, also disappointed in track and field. In boxing, Zeenat Ferdous was eliminated in the first round.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Rakib has advanced to the quarterfinals in the 55kg weight category in boxing, where he will face Australian competitor Jai Dixon. Rakib will be assured of a medal if he wins this match, which will be held this evening.
