Footage of England star Jude Bellingham’s heated exchange with Lionel Messi at the start of the World Cup semi-final against Argentina went viral on social media.
Much of the discussion centered on the moment Messi glared at Bellingham, then shook his head and walked away. Bellingham offered a full explanation for the incident after the match, saying it was simply a disagreement over a foul.
The match between Argentina and England in Atlanta was physical from the outset, with tackles and fouls coming one after another. Amid that intensity, two of the tournament’s most talked-about players, Messi and Bellingham, found themselves face to face.
Bellingham was seen arguing with Messi early in the match, and toward the end of the exchange, Messi shot him a glare — sparking a wide range of reactions from fans online.
Bellingham himself clarified the situation after the match.
“We were actually just talking about a foul — nothing more than that. I know everyone will try to make a big deal out of it, but honestly, nothing special happened there.
“I said, ‘I got fouled a little while ago.’ Then he [Messi] said, ‘What about the foul on me?’ I just said, ‘You’re strong enough, you can handle it.’ That was it — that’s all it was.”
England, however, couldn’t sustain their momentum through to the end of the match. They took the lead in the 55th minute through an Anthony Gordon goal and held onto it until the final ten minutes. But, as has become a pattern at this World Cup, Argentina produced a dramatic late comeback.
Enzo Fernández equalized with a long-range strike off a Messi pass in the 85th minute. Substitute forward Lautaro Martínez then headed in the winning goal from a floated Messi cross in the second minute of stoppage time.
The reigning champions secured their place in a second consecutive World Cup final with the 2-1 win. Despite the disappointment of the loss, Bellingham described facing Messi as a special experience.
“Playing against Messi is definitely a huge moment for me. I have no ill feelings toward him at all. Of course, losing is really difficult — but it’s also a great honor to be able to play against someone like him.”
