Egypt is still celebrating its best-ever World Cup performance after its national team reached the round of 16 at the tournament held across the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Earlier, on Friday, a huge crowd and the country’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi gave the team a warm welcome. Then, on Monday, the players took part in a special event called “100 Million Thanks,” where Mohamed Salah and his teammates circled the field in an open-top bus at Cairo’s National Stadium. Thousands of fans greeted the players with warm applause at the event, which also featured a spectacular fireworks display.
The event included a captivating musical performance that was broadcast live on social media, drawing more than 51 million viewers. It concluded with a concert by popular Egyptian actor and singer Tamer Hosni.
This marked Egypt’s third appearance at the World Cup, and this time, they secured their first-ever win in the tournament’s history. After defeating New Zealand 3-1 in their second group match, the Pharaohs advanced to the next round as group runners-up following draws with Belgium and Iran.
In the round of 32, Egypt qualified by winning a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw against Australia in regulation time. Then, in the round of 16, they raced to a 2-0 lead against Argentina — but conceded three goals within the span of 13 minutes, and their World Cup journey came to an end.
