England have received a significant boost ahead of their World Cup semi-final against Argentina. Key midfielder Declan Rice has recovered substantially from the illness that hampered his performance against Norway, and there is growing confidence that he will be fit to start in the crucial match.

Rice spent three days in bed before the quarter-final against Norway, having picked up a sickness bug during England’s time in Mexico. He started the match against Norway but was substituted at half-time by coach Thomas Tuchel due to his condition. Since England returned to their base, Rice’s condition has improved markedly and, according to The Guardian, he is expected to start in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson against Argentina. England’s official starting lineup has not yet been confirmed.

Rice has been a cornerstone of England’s midfield throughout this World Cup, playing a vital role in disrupting opposition attacks and building play from deep positions. Tuchel will need him fit and sharp for the midfield battle against Lionel Messi, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister.

There are also concerns in the England camp regarding the fitness of Ezri Konsa. The Aston Villa defender was withdrawn against Norway after suffering a muscle strain, though he is also expected to be available for the Argentina match. Reece James could potentially come into the starting XI in Konsa’s place if needed. Bukayo Saka, who impressed with an influential cameo against Norway, could also be in contention to start.

Meanwhile, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has warned his teammates against fixating on Messi alone, noting that the reigning world champions have match-winners throughout their squad who are capable of influencing the outcome of the match.

England are also conscious of keeping their emotions in check for a contest steeped in historic rivalry. The two sides last met at a World Cup in 2002. Wednesday’s semi-final will mark the first time England and Argentina have met at this stage of the tournament.

The match in Atlanta will kick off at 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, July 15, which is 1 a.m. Bangladesh time on Thursday, July 16. The match will be officiated by American referee Ismail Elfath.
