As Spain’s celebrations following their second World Cup title continue, the football world is already turning its attention towards the 24th FIFA World Cup in 2030.
For the first time in history, the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three countries spanning two continents. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco have been confirmed as the joint hosts of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
However, the next edition will carry a uniquely special dimension. As part of the centenary celebrations marking 100 years of the World Cup, the first three matches of the tournament will be played on South American soil. The inaugural World Cup in history was held in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, in 1930, and to mark the centenary of that landmark event, the FIFA Council has unanimously decided that the main opening ceremony of the tournament will take place in Montevideo.
The opening three matches of the 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup in 1930, defeating Argentina in the final. Argentina, as the runners-up in that historic tournament, will also host one match. Paraguay, meanwhile, is home to the headquarters of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), which was the world’s only football governing body at the time the World Cup was created in 1930.
Explaining the rationale behind staging three matches in South America, FIFA stated on its official website, “The 2030 tournament is a historic and symbolic moment for FIFA. It marks exactly 100 years since the first World Cup was held in Uruguay. After detailed discussions with each continental confederation, the FIFA Council has approved this special centenary celebration to be staged in South America — specifically in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.”
All six host nations are guaranteed automatic entry into the main stage of the 2030 World Cup as host teams. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco are already assured of their places in the tournament as the primary co-hosts. In addition, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay — as hosts of the centenary celebration matches — have also secured their spots in the 2030 World Cup without the need to go through any qualifying rounds.
FIFA elaborated on the selection process in their official announcement, stating, “CAF and UEFA jointly proposed the candidacy of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain for the 2030 World Cup. Similarly, CONMEBOL put forward Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as hosts of the centenary celebration matches. All three confederations agreed to support this combined proposal.”
The opening match and centenary celebrations will be held in Montevideo, honouring Uruguay’s historic contribution as both the host nation and the champion of the first World Cup in 1930. Argentina will host one match in recognition of their role as runners-up in that inaugural tournament. Paraguay will host one match as the home of CONMEBOL, which was founded in 1930 as the world’s first and, at the time, only football governing body.
