Referees have undoubtedly emerged as one of the most talked-about subjects of this World Cup, at times overshadowing the football itself. Coaches and players have vented their frustration over contentious decisions and the complexities of VAR in match after match. In particular, controversy over the perceived leniency shown towards the reigning world champions Argentina has grown into a source of widespread public discontent.
It is against this charged backdrop that Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente chose to put the officiating under the spotlight ahead of the grand final against Argentina. His comments, which effectively placed the referee in the dock before a ball has been kicked in the final, have only served to heighten the tension surrounding an already electric occasion — both on and off the field.
Spain will face Argentina in the World Cup final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 a.m. Bangladesh time. Ahead of the match, De la Fuente made it explicitly clear that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić must not show any leniency or grant exemptions to either side that go beyond the rules of the game. He also warned that Spain must adhere strictly to their own game plan, or they risk paying a heavy price on the field.
Speaking in an interview with Spanish outlet Sport, De la Fuente referred pointedly to referee Vinčić’s past record, noting that he was the man in charge of Argentina’s historic 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening group match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
On the subject of the referee, De la Fuente said, “The referee cannot show any kind of leniency on the field and cannot allow the rules to be flouted. The boundaries of what is legal in football must not be crossed under any circumstances.” He then immediately tempered his remarks, adding, “I have complete and unwavering trust in the referees. But I have even greater trust in our own team, because we know very well what kind of approach we need to take into a match like this.”
When asked how he envisages the final unfolding, the Spain coach said, “It is going to be a magnificent exhibition of football. Two of the finest teams in world football are facing each other, with players who share a great deal in common in terms of talent and quality. From the very first minute, both sides will be looking to demonstrate their brilliance and express their footballing identity on the pitch. And we hope that the referee will manage the finer details of the game in a manner that befits the dignity and stature of a World Cup final.”
