The most successful team in World Cup history is five-time champion Brazil. Three-time champion Argentina is no less impressive, and there is no end to the debate over the success and dominance of these two superpowers on the world stage. But if you look closely at World Cup history, you’ll find a strange statistic: the record for reaching the World Cup final the most times belongs to neither Brazil nor Argentina. Another superpower has surpassed these two arch-rivals to achieve the feat of playing in the most World Cup finals.
Reaching the World Cup final is one thing, but lifting the trophy is another. Just look at the Netherlands — the Dutch have reached the World Cup final three times (1974, 1978 and 2010) but have never lifted the golden trophy. They are one of five unlucky teams to have reached the final and finished as runners-up.
On the other hand, two of this tournament’s semi-finalists, England and Spain, have each qualified for the final only once — and won the trophy on that very first attempt.
Teams with the Most Finals Appearances
When you think of the World Cup final, the names that typically come to mind are the teams that have dominated the tournament — Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany and France. But although Brazil remains the most successful team in World Cup history with five titles, the Seleção does not hold the record for the most final appearances.
That unique record belongs to Germany. “Die Mannschaft” have played in a record eight finals so far, the first five of which came as West Germany. They reached their first final at the 1954 tournament held in Switzerland, where West Germany became the third team to win the World Cup, defeating Hungary 3-2 in Bern.
Twelve years later, however, Germany suffered their first-ever final defeat, losing to hosts England at Wembley in 1966. Geoff Hurst’s extra-time double sent the four-time world champions to their first runner-up finish.
West Germany became the fourth host nation to win the World Cup — after Uruguay, Italy and England — by beating the Netherlands in the 1974 final. They then went on to reach three consecutive finals between 1982 and 1990, though their dreams were dashed in the first two: a 3-1 loss to Italy at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and a 3-2 loss to Argentina at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
At the very next tournament — the 1990 World Cup in Italy — West Germany took sweet revenge by defeating Argentina in the final in Rome. With that victory, they claimed their third title after playing in six finals.
After the two Germanys were reunited, they competed as a single Germany and reached their seventh final at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. However, thanks to a standout performance from Ronaldo — and perhaps his memorable haircut — Germany lost that final 2-0.
Germany then earned another memorable victory over Argentina at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, lifting their fourth World Cup trophy after winning in extra time.
