Young star Lamine Yamal had achieved the honour of winning the World Cup by facing his idol, Lionel Messi, on the grandest stage of all. Yet even as he celebrated the victory, the Spanish winger did not forget to pay his respects to Messi in the aftermath. In the midst of Spain’s trophy celebrations, Yamal stepped away from his jubilant teammates and walked across the pitch to find Messi and offer his condolences.
Messi was sitting alone in a corner of the field, absorbing the pain of defeat. Yamal walked straight towards him.
In that moment, the Rosario superstar acknowledged Yamal’s gesture and rose to his feet to greet him. The two then embraced each other with warmth and genuine affection. The scene felt as though it completed a circle — bringing to mind that memorable UNICEF photo shoot in 2007, when a young Messi had held baby Yamal in his arms, little knowing that nearly two decades later they would meet again, on opposite sides of a World Cup final.
Although Yamal draws comparisons to Neymar in terms of his playing style, he has always regarded Messi as the greatest player in the history of football. Messi, for his part, had been equally generous in his praise of the youngster even before the final, saying, “He is one of the best footballers in the world. I wish him all the best, because his success is Barcelona’s success.”
