Alexis Mac Allister scored Argentina’s opening goal in their 3-1 quarter-final victory over Switzerland at the 2026 World Cup. After scoring, the Liverpool midfielder set the stadium alight with a dance that quickly went viral on social media. He has now revealed the story behind it.
Mac Allister said he and Nicolás González had planned the celebration in advance. “This dance was originally from a TikTok video that Nico González and I had seen. My wife sent it to me first. Then Nico and I watched it together and said, ‘We have to do this.’ The agreement between us was that whoever scores first has to do the dance.”
He admitted the execution was not exactly what he had envisioned. “I don’t know if I did it in the best way, but anyway, the dance got done.”
The celebration did not stop at the moment of the goal. Mac Allister performed the dance again during the post-match celebrations in front of the crowd, and for the same reason: “Nicolás kept trying to get me to do it again, and eventually I did.”
With Switzerland beaten, the reigning world champions now turn their attention to a semi-final against England, scheduled for Wednesday night.
